Hybrids becoming popular among Gen Y

January 2012

Younger drivers are developing a strong affinity with hybrid cars, according to a recent survey.

In its annual survey of Gen Y consumers and their automotive needs, research firm Deloitte found that 59 per cent of young respondents preferred an "electrified vehicle" over any other type of car.

Vice chairman and automotive practice leader at Deloitte LLP Craig Giffi believed that the survey results indicated a shift in consumer sentiment.

"Gen Y consumers also view hybrid technology as proven and reliable," Mr Giffi stated (January 19).

"Almost six in ten Gen Y respondents prefer a hybrid over any other type of vehicle, while a mere two in 100 prefer a pure battery electric vehicle - demonstrating that Gen Y is familiar and comfortable with hybrid technology, but not so much with battery-only technology."

The 19 to 31 age group forms the largest segment of car buyers, with Deloitte figures indicating that 40 per cent of units sold in the next ten years will be bought by a Gen Y consumer.

The Toyota Prius and Toyota Camry are among some of the only hybrid model available on the Australian market.

The cars are becoming increasingly popular - the Toyota Hybrid Camry recently achieved a five-star ANCAP safety rating, while the Toyota Prius continues to gain recognition for reducing carbon emissions.
