The Toyota Corolla was Australia's most popular car last month, with 3,766 cars sold in September, according to new figures.
Official VFACTS data showed that the Toyota Corolla outpaced the Holden Commodore, as well as the Toyota HiLux and Holden Cruze to be crowned Australia's favourite new car in September.
Toyota, the figures show, was also Australia's best-selling marque, with 17,378 branded cars sold last month. It was trailed by Holden and Ford, which sold 11,009 and 8,161 units, respectively.
Earlier this year, Toyota was identified as the world's greenest brand by international consultancy Interbrand.
In its Best Global Green Brands research report, Toyota outranked all other automotive marques thanks to its environmental sustainability and ongoing effort to make its cars greener.
According to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), Australia is still on track to see more than one million new cars purchased before the end of 2011.
In September, some 86,819 new cars were sold across the country, bringing the year-to-date total to 752,128.However, FCAI figures also indicate that this total is 3.7 per cent lower than at the same time last year.
According to Ian Chalmers, chief executive of FCAI, it may be challenging to hit the one million mark this year, but "continued growth" is expected for the last three months of 2011.
He said: "Reduced sales in the second quarter of 2011 have set a challenging target for the final three months of the year, but industry resolve is high."
