Japanese car manufacturer Toyota could soon be adding turbocharging technology to its line-up, according to new reports.
Already boasting a number of hybrid models such as the Toyota Prius and the Toyota Camry, automotive news site The Detroit Bureau has stated (January 19) that the marque could soon turn its focus to small direct-injected petrol engines with turbochargers.
Recently, Toyota teamed up with Gazoo Racing Masters of Nurburgring (GRMN) to produce a turbocharged 178-horsepower version of the Toyota Vitz - known as the Toyota Yaris in Australia - to feature at the recent Tokyo Auto Salon.
Leading sources told the website that it's a sign of things to come from Toyota as it looks to match the technology of its competitors.
"They're not going to be able to keep up otherwise," Dave Sullivan, an analyst with the consulting firm AutoPacific explained.
Industry experts anticipate that the next-generation Toyota Corolla is the model most likely to benefit from the new direct injection technology and could arrive as early as 2013.
