Toyota has received a top safety rating in the latest round of crash tests conducted by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
In results released today (January 23), the 2011 Toyota Camry was awarded five stars for its safety features.
ANCAP chair Lauchlan McIntosh believes that the results help the marque to stand out in the highly competitive small car category.
"Toyota now needs to work on getting the top ratings for pedestrian protection," Mr McIntosh said.
"Many manufacturers are now scoring in the top category for occupant protection but more attention must be paid to protecting pedestrians as well."
The 2011 Toyota Camry scored full marks in the side impact crash test, while standard safety features such as antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC) all contributed to the high score.
The ratings system is supported by all Australian and New Zealand motoring clubs and governments, as well as the Victorian Transport Accident Commission, NRMA Insurance and the FIA Foundation.
